Formula-1 shakedowns in Spain
By Emeli Dean
In the middle of March, the Formula-1 racing is going to geared up to start again. This week the drivers could demonstrate their abilities at the showdown in Jerez, Spain. The winner of last year’s constructor standings Ferrari dominated the first day of the test racing. With 1:19,845 minutes the incumbent World Champion Kimi Räikkönen drove the fastest round in the new F2008. This was the maiden voyage of this year’s Ferrari racing car which presents some spectacular details especially in the aerodynamic.
The Technical-Director Aldo Costa revealed they had re-engineered the aerodynamic completely but their real secret is below the shield. One of the spectators was record holder and Ferrari advisor; Michael Schumacher who had been approached just for this event to keep a close eye on the first ride of the new car.
Second day’s winner was Fernando Alonso who starts once again for Team Renault this year. Alonso was received with open arms and seems to be very comfortable with the French team. He commented satisfied that there had been several changes in the team. They had improved a lot, so that it is actually a new adventure just as starting with a new team. With a minimum time of 1:19,503 minutes he drove about three tenth faster than Räikkönen the day before. “Initially I was a little reserved since I haven’t sit in a racing car for a while but at the end of the day I started to risk more” said the Spaniard. Renault will be the only team which car will be presented until the end of the month in Paris.
At the last day of the showdowns there was a surprise winner. The 25-year-old German racing driver Timo Glock who is replacing Ralf Schumacher; he finished his fastest round in the new Toyota in 1:20,598 minutes.
With this result he was indeed slower than the two winners of the past days but even so he was very happy. “I think we have made some significant improvements. It is encouraging to see us with the fastest round at the end of this day.” As the current Champion in the Formula GP2, Glock wants to bring the team to the Top Ten again. With 96 rounds he was not only the fastest but also the busiest racing driver.
Less successful, on the other hand, was former Toyota driver Ralf Schumacher who now started for the Force India which is the first Indian Team in the Formula 1 history. The team is the follower of the English Spyker F1 Team. Schumacher was very frustrated about his miserable showdown which only brought him the last place and said, “It is possible that this was my last ride in a Formula 1 racing car.“
