Puerto Operation involves another 49 cyclists

By Stephen Lars

The Spanish government is being required by the world cycling federation to help identify the riders involved in the Operation Puerto doping scandal.

Another 49 cyclists are implicated in the Operation Puerto doping affair which is threatening to cast an even darker cloud over the sport as well as the first two major stage races of the season.

In May 2006 the first signs of ‘Operation Puerto’ erupted when police uncovered an alleged blood doping and doping network when they raided the premises of a Madrid sports Doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

The search started when sports Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes, Coach Manolo Saiz and six other people were arrested in Madrid on suspicion of providing doping services to cyclists.

Some 200 athletes and 58 cyclists were also apparently implicated, leading to the suspension of 13 riders - including famous names like Basso and Ullrich – before last year’s Tour de France.
