Round Pond suffered a rupture in her left knee this past Saturday after finishing in third place in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park. Her owner, Rick Porter informed the news press on Monday regarding her retirement.

Round Pond, 5, traveled from Oaklawn to Keeneland on Monday morning, and remains in the care of her trainer, Michael Matz. Porter said X-rays of her knee are being passed on to Dr. Larry Bramlage, and it has yet to be decided whether Round Pond will need surgical procedure. They await the outcome of other medical results.

Some of the options given to Porter regarding her recuperation may be placing a screw in her knee. The fact is that he is just waiting to follow the doctor’s orders.

Porter also has in mind breeding Round Pond. However, he is uncertain of when and the matter lies in the suggested by Bramlage. Porters leading stallion preferences are A.P. Indy or Storm Cat.

A quantity of Round Pond’s victories includes her 5 1/2-length win in the Distaff, Grade 1 Acorn and the Grade 3 Azeri, which were among her much-loved races from the filly. She takes her leave with seven triumphs from thirteen starts. Her entire income comes to a total of $1,998,700.

As Porter remembered some of her victories he expressed the following: “Her win in the Acorn was just an unbelievable last few 100 yards, where she blew by those horses when I didn’t think she was going to make it,” said Porter. “Then, of course, there was the bang-bang race in the Azeri with Happy Ticket. And the ultimate was just blowing those horses away in the Breeders’ Cup, showing how good she really was.” “It’s a sad day,” Porter said of the retirement. “Round Ponds don’t come along very often. She’s as good as they get.”

This is not the first time she has suffered from knee problems and had bone chip removed from her left knee when she was 3 that was followed by second-place finish in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks. She came back the next year to win the Azeri and the Breeders’ Cup.
