Beckham’s Debut Might be Against Chelsea
By Audrey Nolan
The first game that David Beckham may play with his new team the Los Angeles Galaxy will be against the Chelsea in an exhibition game on July the 21st during a tournament that the promoters are calling the “World Series of Football”.
The 31 year-old player signed up a $250 million contract for five years with the Los Angeles Galaxy about a month ago. His contract with Real Madrid ends on June 30th; the MLS team was not expecting him until August but he has a knee injury that sidelined him for 1 month.
Leiweke, head of the organization that runs the Galaxy, said “We still have to work through him finishing his term at Real Madrid and I’m fairly certain we can get David comfortable and playing with this team in time for the Chelsea. We haven’t gotten that commitment yet, we haven’t gotten that far with him. But I think it’s reasonable to assume that the Chelsea game in particular will be one where we see Mr. Beckham.”
The coach from the LA Galaxy Frank Yallop, said that if Beckham is available to play against Chelsea he will have to make some subtle changes to the line up before he gets there. He said “The style and the way I want to play is very suitable to David. We play a quick, rapid-ball-moving style that he’s going to enjoy,” Yallop said. “He’s got one of the best, if not the best, player in the U.S. playing on his team in Landon Donovan.
As part of the tournament, Chelsea will play South Korea’s Suwon Bluewings on July 17 during a doubleheader in Carson that has the Galaxy meeting Mexico’s Tigres. The Bluewings will play the Tigres on July 21.
