Discovery drops sponsor for cycling team

By Stephen Lars

Last Friday, Armstrong’s longtime agent and general manager of the Discovery team made the statement that the group will still race under the Discovery banner in 2007, including the Tour de France, but it is required to find a new supporter for 2008.

Discovery faltered in the Tour last season with Armstrong’s retirement, but the team has been aggressively looking to sign up top riders, including Ivan Basso, who finished third in 2004 and second in 2005.

The inclusion of the Italian Ivan Basso is expected to restore the team’s fortunes, but it has also brought in controversy as he was expelled from the 2006 Tour due to a link to a Spaniard doping investigation.

For Armstrong’s team the future does not look too bright ahead as they need to promptly locate a new sponsor for the year 2008 as to find a new leading rider to fully consolidate the elite cycling squad.
