Mosley’s Comeback to the Welterweight Gives Him a Victory
By Audrey Nolan
Sugar Shane Mosley’s return to the welterweight division, turned to be the best decision that he has ever made.
On his first fight since 2005, Mosley dominated the former title holder Luis Collazo, winning by unanimous decision from the judges on Saturday Night in Mandalay Bay before a crowd of more than 5,000 spectators.
Collazo had some good moments during the first half of the fight, but Mosley dominated most of it. He assured his victory with an 11th-round knockdown. “Collazo was slick and he took a pretty good punch. He fought a good fight, and I know he’ll be back,” Mosley said. “The southpaw style affected me a little, but I knew what to do. I knew I was faster than him and I could hit him with my quick jabs.”
After Mosley lost his middleweight title to Winky Wright in 2004, he decided to go back to welterweight for 2 fights, but a big deal of money fight against Fernando Vargas make him go back. He scored 2 knockouts to Vargas in 2006. After that he insisted that welterweight was his division so he went back. “It feels good to be a welterweight again,” Mosley said. “I felt light on my feet. I want to keep myself in shape and maybe fight again in June. I am going to keep myself in shape and tuned up.”
Mosley won a temporary belt that became available because champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.[tag] is moving up to junior middleweight division to fight [tag]Oscar De La Hoya on May 5. If Mayweather returns to the division, Mosley is his mandatory challenger. If Mayweather stays at 154 pounds, Mosley will keep the belt outright.
