The Dixie Chicks: Grammy Winners
By Audrey Nolan
The Dixie Chicks were the winners last night after they won 5 Grammys out of the 5 nominations they had, including Album of the Year for Taking the Long Way and Record of the Year for “Not ready to make nice”.
The success of “Not ready to make nice” was in response of the infamous episode they had on a concert in London when the leading singer Natalie Maines said “that she was ashamed that the president of the United States was from Texas”. The country music stations pull the bands music out of rotation while angry fans destroyed The Chicks albums and posters.
When Maines received the award for best song of the year she said “I, for the first time in my life, am speechless,” and then when they went back to the stage again to receive the award for Country Album of the Year they joked” To quote the great Simpsons—’Heh-Heh.’” Just kidding. A lot of people just turned their TVs off right now,” she continued. “I’m very sorry for that.”
Mary J. Blidge who came to the Grammys with 8 nominations, came back with 3 awards for her comeback album The Breakthrough, including Best Album of R&B.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers won 4 Grammys including; Best Rock Album for Stadium Arcadium, and Best Rock Song for “Dani California”.
Other Grammy winners whose careers were already flourishing in the music era included: Bob Dylan, who won Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album; Bruce Springsteen, who won Best Traditional Folk Album and Best Long Form Music Video; and Peter Frampton, who picked up Best Pop Instrumental Album.
The show also featured tributes to late music legends James Brown and Armet Ertegun and performances by Smokey Robinson and Lionel Richie. Also were recognized the winners of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Grammys, including Joan Baez, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, Booker T. & The MG’s, Maria Callas, Ornette Coleman and Bob Wills.
