Officials said Ryan, 59, was taken to the Round Rock Medical Center with recurring symptoms of a pre-existing condition. They did not specify the condition.

Reid Ryan declined to specify the condition, but said it was discovered when his father had double-bypass heart surgery in 2000.

Ryan spent 27 years in the Major Leagues with the New York Mets, the California Angels, the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers before retiring from baseball in 1993. His 5,714 strikeouts and seven no-hitters remain Major League records.

Ryan was to be transferred to a Houston hospital for further evaluation, said a spokesman for the Round Rock Express, one of the minor league teams the former pitcher owns.
