Former Boxer Roberto Duran to the Hall of Fame
By Alfred Johnson
Two unforgettable stars of boxing; the World Champion in four weight divisions with a career that lasted five decades, Roberto Duran, and the Olympic gold medalist Pernell Whitaker, another four-division champion, were voted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Thursday. Duran grew up in Panama and had an underprivileged life with very little education. At the age of 16, he began boxing for money and turned professional in 1967, he continued his career until the age of 50, due to severe injuries in a car accident in 2001.
Over five decades, “Hands of Stone” Duran compiled a 103-16 record, with 70 knockouts, and won world titles in four divisions: lightweight (1972-1979), welterweight (1980), junior middleweight (1983), and middleweight (1989-1990). Duran fought everyone possible including many who have ended up Hall of Famers such as: Ken Buchanan, Wilfredo Benitez, Pipino Cuevas, Tommy Hearns, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Sugar Ray Leonard (three times).
