SWEDEN 2-2 ENGLAND
By Camilla Mancini
On Tuesday the 20, England faced Sweden in Cologne while, Trinidad and Tobago was in Stuttgart playing against Paraguay. Of the four teams two were certain about their next steps: England with 6 points was definitely going to the next round and Paraguay with no points was on the other side of the line.
Sweden had 4 points while Trinidad and Tobago was on 1 point. That was leaving an open door to Trinidad and Tobago, which needed a winner match to go ahead Sweden, lamentably for the Soccer Warriors they just got a 2-0, giving the 3 points away to Paraguay. This allowed the Swedes to go to Round of 8.
England and Sweden
To Sweden get one more point was more than enough to be completely saved. The match didn’t start very well for the English striker Michael Owen who in the 2nd minute suffered a collapse in his right knee. The injury was serious and Owen’s only choice was to leave the field. Eriksson send Peter Crouch to cover Owen’s position.
But England was a hard adversary anyway and at the 34th minute Joe Cole placed his team ahead, when he gave us an impressive goal that Isaksson couldn’t reach. The rest of the first part it was Lampard who kept the Swede goalkeeper in rush, but didn’t have the right shot.
On the 51st minute Allback raised high and flicked Ashley Cole, and score the 2,000th goal in FIFA World Cup history (1-1). On the 69th minute Gerrard went in the field for England’s last substitution of the night and 16 minutes later with Joe Cole cross, scored the second goal for his team, which was also his second on the World Cup 2006.
The last shot came when everyone though the score was definitive. At the 90th minute in a hit back Larsson stabbed in from close range just ahead of Mellberg from a low throw-in that England’s defenders failed to deal with. (2-2)
The first place took by England sends them to play on June 25th against Ecuador in Stuttgart. And Swedes are going to meet Germans on Munich’s field, the day before. Both matches will be quite interesting.
